Current Rep - Open
Candidates:
GOP - Roger Victory (R-Hudsonville)
Update 5-27-2012 - The primary is the election here, as would be expected in this new district.
Update 8-30-2012 - Roger Victory lives up to his last name with a 89 vote win. That's a close win.
Old District (Ottawa Portion of 74th)
Dave Agema - 21,867
Leon Chase - 4,516
Ottawa County has gone from two whole districts and two partial districts to three full districts with its population growth. It's the most republican in the state, and all of the districts based here are republican (with one old partial district being a swing district.) The districts were shifted a little as well.
The old 88th is in Allegan County and now mostly the 80's. Most of the new 88th is from Dave Agema's 74th district partially in Kent County. Agema is termed out and isn't in this new 88th district anyway.
The new district covers Allendale Twp, Chester Twp, Coopersville, Georgetown Twp, Polkton Twp, Tallemadge Twp, and Wright Twp. Allendale came from the 89th District, Chester from the 91st, and the rest from the Ottawa portion of the old 74th Agema District.
It's one of the safest seats in the state in the heart of Michigan's Dutch country.
Obama only won one precinct, in Allendale. That was probably Grand Valley. Bush swept all precincts. This district will be decided in the August primary.

The "Peter Principle" poll on the right side of the page is silly and insulting. You guys should be careful with referring to President Obama as "uppity." I will never vote for Obama, but the petty and immature tone of that poll is beneath the dignity of legitimate political discourse. Please take the poll down or re-word it. Thanks.
I won't disagree with the poll being silly, insulting, immature, or petty. It is, but the term uppity was never used in the poll or elsewhere on this site by me. Nose up in the air arrogance I've used, but that could just as easily apply to John Kerry.
I coined the term "Peter Principle in Chief" due to how he's handled the budget back in 2011 during one of my more inflammatory posts. As someone who owns businesses, I'm not going to be arrogantly lectured to on budgets by some clown whose never balanced one in his life. Gloves are off.
As far as dignity of legitimate political discourse goes, there never was a lot of dignity to political discourse going back to Jefferson-Adams. Often those who preach about civility are the worst offenders behind the scenes in my experience in the business. I call things as I see them. You may or may not like how I call them (and with most people, it depends on which post) but you'll know where I stand and how strong I stand on that topic.
The poll stays for now. I'll probably change them sometime after the primary when I shift more to general election mode.
